Assessment

The assessment of all Year 11 and Year 12 subjects will be informed by the SSABSA guidelines.

School Assessment
Assessment will include two major functions:

Supporting Student Learning
Using assessment to encourage, assist and enhance student learning - usually regarded as the 'formative' use of assessment - will also enhance the relationship between teacher and students and among students. Using assessment to give feedback to students on their strengths and weaknesses may involve teacher and students working together to monitor student progress. Assessment will also give feedback to teachers about the effectiveness and appropriateness of their teaching of a particular program. Formative assessment will be conducted both formally and informally.

Determining Levels of Achievement
Teachers use their professional skills and judgement to determine levels of achievement by devising or using assessment tasks that measure the extent to which students have achieved the expectations set out in the domains and/or objectives. When assessment is used in this way it is usually referred to as 'summative assessment'. Planning or choosing such tasks requires teachers to take care that students have the opportunity to demonstrate their level of achievement. For example, criteria for assessment should be clearly communicated to students before they attempt the assessment task.

Summative assessment will be conducted formally. Whether assessment is being used formatively or summatively it will:

  • reflect the aims and objectives of the subject;
  • include a range of tasks that reflect an appropriate balance of the kinds of learning in the syllabus;
  • value both process and product;
  • use procedures that are appropriate for all students;
  • encourage students to be involved in the planning, timing and presentation of their work, and thus to take increasing responsibility for their own learning.
