Optics & Lenses

Light refracting through a Concave lens

Project Brief

The study of Optics in Year 11 Physics is often followed by a brief discussion of optical fibres, known as Photonics. In a simple lens experiment, by having the properties of the lens, such as the focal length, one can find the image. Such a basic concept can be reversed and extended to much more advanced application of Optics and Photonics. With the use of holey fibres for biological and chemical sensing, detection of proteins, bacteria, or viruses in different media is possible. One specific example of this application, currently running in South Australia, is water quality monitoring.
